The challenge
KNZR is one of Bakersfield's most recognized radio brands — AM 1560 and FM 97.7, the market's FOX News Radio affiliate — but the station's website was working against it. The old site buried the live stream, made the show schedule hard to scan, and looked dated next to the national brands KNZR carries. Listeners who arrived from a Google search for a host's name or a breaking Kern County story often left without ever pressing play.
The station also needed the site to serve two audiences at once: listeners hunting for a stream, a schedule, or a contest, and advertisers evaluating whether KNZR was a serious media partner. Anything that felt slow, cluttered, or unmaintained cost credibility on both sides.
What we built
We started with the listening experience. A persistent listen-live player rides along with the visitor no matter where they navigate, so someone who lands on a news article can start the stream and keep reading without interrupting audio. On mobile — where the majority of the station's traffic sits — the player stays thumb-reachable instead of hiding behind a menu.
Next came the newsroom layout. The homepage leads with a latest-news grid so Kern County headlines are visible in the first screen, with clear typographic hierarchy that separates local coverage from syndicated national programming. Story pages were rebuilt to load fast and read cleanly on a phone, which is where most breaking-news traffic arrives.
The show schedule was rebuilt as a scannable weekly grid with dedicated host pages, so a listener searching a personality by name lands on a real page instead of a PDF or a buried paragraph. That gave the station indexable, on-brand destinations for the searches its own audience was already performing.
Finally, we built a contest hub and advertiser-facing sections that give the sales team something concrete to point at. Promotions get their own entry points rather than being wedged into a sidebar, and the whole site was wired on a structure the station's team can update without a developer.
